Abstract:
Shoulder dislocations occur as a result of trauma or from minimal movements such as reaching backward. They most often dislocate anteriorly, resulting in a squared-off deformity of the lateral shoulder and decreased range of motion at the shoulder. There are many techniques used to perform reduction, and clinicians should be comfortable with several of them. Reduction can generally be accomplished without analgesia, but difficult reductions may require procedural sedation and analgesia. Post-reduction, patients should be placed in a sling for comfort with instructions to avoid the activities and movements that caused the dislocation, to gently mobilize the shoulder and elbow early. Close orthopedic follow-up should be provided.
