Abstract
Contact vulvovagitis typically presents with itching, which can be severe, as well as edematous swelling of the vulvovaginal area. Diagnosis includes identification of exogenous irritants, which may be hard to identify, or endogenous conditions. Patients may be instructed to manage symptoms with sitz baths, practice vulvar hygiene, or occasionally apply topical corticosteroids. In severe cases, intramuscular steroids may be appropriate.

Presentation
A patient presents for evaluation of severe vulvar itching that may be accompanied by edematous swelling. Occasionally there will be tenderness, pain, burning, and dysuria severe enough to cause urinary retention. The vulvovaginal area is variably inflamed, erythematous, and edematous. In more severe cases there may be a microvesicular papular eruption with excoriations. In cases where there is chronic contact dermatitis, there may be an eczematoid appearance with cracks, fissures, scaling, and skin thickening (lichenification).
