Abstract
Cervical strain (whiplash) is a common injury seen in automobile accidents and contact sports. Patients typically present with soreness and tenderness over the neck. Patients can be cleared via clinical criteria, either Nexus or Canadian C-spine; however, if they are not able to be cleared, imaging (either x-ray or CT) should be obtained to rule out a cervical spine fracture. Clinicians should also evaluate for a concomitant closed head injury based on mechanism and presenting symptoms. Once the patient is either clinically or radiographically cleared, they should be provided with analgesia and anticipatory guidance. Patients should be informed that the pain may worsen over the next couple of days.
