Abstract
Acromioclavicular (Shoulder) Separation is a common injury that typically occurs with a fall onto the affected shoulder. The injury severity depends on the number of ligaments torn and whether they are completely or partially torn. Lower-grade injuries (type 1 and 2), will likely not have an obvious deformity, but will have tenderness to palpation. Radiographs should be ordered to rule out an associated clavicle, scapula, or humerus fracture as well as a possible shoulder dislocation. Regardless of injury grade, the patient should be placed in a sling and told to begin gentle ROM exercises as soon as possible. Higher-grade injuries (grade 3 and above) require more urgent orthopedic referral, as there is a chance of surgical fixation.
