Abstract
This chapter reviews the diagnosis and management of acute uvular edema. Patients present with acute isolated swelling of the uvula. Most have mild symptoms and a benign clinical course, but more severe cases can lead to airway compromise. It is reasonable to provide the same treatment one would give for an allergic reaction although the patient may not respond. Consider ACE inhibitor-induced angioedema, hereditary angioedema, immediate hypersensitivity type I reactions, or infectious causes including streptococcus as possible etiologies. All patients should be observed for an adequate period of time to ensure that there is either improvement or no further increase in swelling prior to discharge.
