Recessed sacral ala (solid arrows) relative to dense iliac bone adjacent to sacroiliac joint—iliac cortical density (ICD) (open arrow). CT scan best shows these uncommon situations. Nerve roots can be seen surrounded by fat within these recessed alae, especially on uninjured right side of patient.
