A–D, Principle of tension band plate. Because long
bones are subject to eccentric loading, plate applied to outer (or convex) side counteracts tension forces and provides rigid internal fixation, whereas plate applied on inner (or concave) surface provides little fixation and would come under excessive bending stresses and
soon show fatigue fracture.
