Four-bar linkage system of cruciate ligaments reveals that patellar tendon is roughly parallel to posterior cruciate ligament and quadriceps tendon is roughly parallel to anterior cruciate ligament at 30 degrees of flexion when patella is engaged with trochlear groove. Loss of patella results in alteration of extensor mechanism moment arm and loss of contraction strength of quadriceps.
