Earlier posterior cruciate–retaining prostheses had flatter sagittal plane geometry that increased the contact forces (longer arrows over a smaller area of the polyethylene). This, along with poor polyethylene, created delamination and higher wear. Most current designs of posterior cruciate ligament-retaining knee implants have more conforming surfaces to decrease the forces on the polyethylene (smaller arrows over a larger area).
